If you are a music lover , you probably know Elvis Presley. The king of rock and roll was a sensation of the 20th century. The American singer earned numerous records and rewards. His music continued topping the billboards.

The cultural icon was born on 8th January 1935. His single, Heartbreak Hotel, is considered one of the greatest songs of all time. The three-time Grammy winner was also honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018. However, Elvis’s public and private life was controversial. He represented African Americans in his songs.

A major section of society saw him as a threat. His performance style and charming personality symbolized him as an erotic figure. Director Baz Luhrmann filmed Elvis’s life from the perspective of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Parker managed Elvis for more than two decades. The movie features important aspects of Elvis’s life. This also includes his on-and-off relationship with Parker.

Ever since the release of the movie, fans have been curious to know how true it is. There’s also a scene where Elvis fired Parker on stage. Let’s find out more about the movie and what happened between Elvis and his manager.

Here’s What Happened Between Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker

Now, here comes the answer. Elvis Presley did not fire his manager on stage. However, the tension grew between them in Las Vegas. Alanna Nash, the writer of the book The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley, stated that Elvis fired his manager in 1973.

But not in public. Post this. Tom Parker demanded a handsome penalty amount from Elvis. The amount is debatable, though. The movie shows it to be 8 million dollars. But, some estimates believe it to be around 2-2.5 million dollars. The singer couldn’t pay the whooping amount. He had no options left. The duo got back together after this.

This scene was inspired by an incident in September 1973. Presley got angry on stage as Las Vegas Hilton fired a Kitchen employee he liked. This also caused an argument between him and Parker. As a result, Elvis fired his manager.

Tom Parker had great control over Elvis’s life. This was the main reason for the conflict between them. Parker influenced his professional and personal decisions. It also included his decision to marry Priscilla. But the American actress filed for divorce five years after the marriage. It was in 1973, on Elvis’s 38th birthday. The two of them later remained on cordial terms. Parker helped Elvis to start his career.

He brought profitable deals for the singer. It included the contract with RCA Victor, TV appearances, and PR management. This helped Elvis to get out of poverty. Elvis wanted to make revolutionary music. But, Parker restricted him to commercial feel-good songs. He also disapproved of Presley’s wish for a world tour. He even trapped Elvis into a five-year contract with Las Vegas Casino Residency.

Presley later knew that Parker could not move out of the country as he was an illegal immigrant. It is also said that Parker took half of Elvis’s earnings. But, according to Todd Slaughter, it was only twenty-five percent.

Todd has been the president of the largest Elvis fan club for fifty years. Even after Presley died in 1977, Parker continued to manage his estates. His gambling addiction and multiple health issues made him miserable. The crooked manager ultimately died in 1997.
