The Peacock Theater erupted with applause and cheers when HBO’s Hacks won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. Many people had expected The Bear to take the top spot this year, but Jean Smart and the Hacks team proved everyone wrong. Hacks won three awards from 14 nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys and tonight’s event.
Jean Smart, the leading performer on the show, added another accolade to her list. She won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The show’s writers, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for their work on the episode “Bulletproof.”
Hannah Einbinder, a co-star, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress. Paul W. Downs was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Lucia Aniello was recognized for her directing in “Bulletproof.”
At last week’s Creative Arts Emmys, the team was also nominated in categories like Outstanding Contemporary Costumes and Outstanding Guest Actor for Christopher Lloyd.
After a year-long break between its second and third seasons, Hacks has returned to the awards scene with a bang. Alongside Shōgun, the HBO comedy performed exceptionally well at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards in July. While Shōgun won four awards, Hacks secured two.

It was announced in the spring that the comedy would return for a fourth season. The specifics are still unknown, but the cast is set to begin filming soon, showing that the network values the show’s continued success and popularity.
Other Nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series
The competition for Outstanding Comedy Series was fierce. Along with Hacks and The Bear, other contenders included FX’s Reservation Dogs, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
Each show brought something unique and exciting, showcasing remarkable talent both in front of and behind the camera. Check out more of our Emmys coverage and stay tuned for updates on Season 4 of Hacks. Stream the show now on Max.
This year’s Emmy Awards had a clear winner, and it was Shōgun. Going into the event with 8 nominations, FX’s hit show took home 4 wins. This brings its total to 18 wins, counting both tonight’s event and the Creative Arts Emmy Awards held last week.
Among the big wins, Hiroyuki Sanada won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Anna Sawai took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
The show also claimed the prestigious award for Outstanding Drama Series. This has been a huge moment for Shōgun, a historical drama that has gained worldwide attention.
Unlike shows like The Crown and The Morning Show, this was Shōgun’s first time at the Emmys. The show only has one season so far. Set in Japan during the year 1600, it portrays the intense and brutal fight for power after the leader of the Council of Regents dies.
The plot focuses on politics, social status, and the ruthless tactics needed to survive and succeed in such an environment. With so many wins tonight, the production team will likely move quickly to get the second season ready.
Shōgun’s wins tonight include Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (awarded to Frederick E.O. Toye), and Outstanding Drama Series.
At last week’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the show received 17 nominations and won 14 awards, including Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie, and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, which was given to Néstor Carbonell.

Other Big Winners at the 2024 Emmy Awards
Shōgun wasn’t the only major winner at the 2024 Emmys. The Bear also performed well, taking home 11 awards. These included Ebon Moss-Bachrach winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Liza Colòn-Zayas winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Last year, The Bear set records with 13 nominations and 10 wins, continuing its success in the comedy category this year. With a fourth season on the way, the show is expected to keep bringing in more awards.
Another standout at this year’s event was Netflix’s hit show, Baby Reindeer. The series won 6 awards from 11 nominations between tonight and the previous week.
Richard Gadd won Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Lead Actor in the same category. Jessica Gunning, who played a stalker in the series, won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
While you wait for the next season of Shōgun, which is expected to collect even more awards, you can stream the first season on Hulu.
