What are Luffy’s Gears?
Luffy, over the course of the show, has displayed various power-ups, which he generally refers to as “Gears”. His normal state is what we call the 1st gear, whereas 2nd gear, used against the CP9 in the Enies Lobby, enhances his speed, resistance, and strength. Luffy makes the rubber cells in his body vibrate at an enormous speed, due to which friction is generated, making him hot, quick, and powerful.
Gear 3rd is the mind-boggling one. This one requires him to inflate one of his limbs and increase it to an enormous, gigantic size which increases the weight and mass of the limb. Attacking the enemy with it feels like an attack written down by the gods of elephants. Although overuse of this makes his body relatively very small, forcing him to not fight for the time being.
Gear 4th, by far, is the greatest of all. He combines all the previous gears and makes them into one big gear. It makes him bigger, stronger, and faster. This increases his chance of victory by a great percentage. He also combines this with his Haki to increase his power even more. The flaw of this is that he cannot use this power for an extended time as it drains out a huge amount of energy from him and could cost him his life.

Although various theories about the 5th gear are surfacing on the internet, the 4th one will always be the strongest and most amazing. This technique showcases how creative Luffy is to create a whole new gear exclusive to himself. Fans couldn’t believe their eyes watching the episode because it is some out-of-the-world experience.
Luffy first uses Gear Four against Donquixote Doflamingo in episode 726, “Gear Fourth!” the Phenomenal Bondman!” from the anime series One Piece. Luffy removes his sandals and activates Gear Four in this episode. His body morphs into a big torso covered in Busoshoku Haki and ornamented with tribal-like motifs. The arrival of the Bondman leads him to bounce compulsively, and he is unable to stop. He strikes him, sending him falling into the settlement below the tower.
