It has been nearly 20 years since Keanu Reeves first played John Constantine, the chain-smoking occult detective. Fans have waited a long time for a sequel, and after years of rumors, the project is finally moving forward.
Reeves recently spoke to Inverse and confirmed that he and director Francis Lawrence have successfully pitched their idea for Constantine 2 to DC Studios. The project is now in the scripting phase, which means the team is working on writing the story.
The original 2005 film featured Reeves as John Constantine, a detective and exorcist who can see angels and demons living among humans. After attempting suicide as a teenager, he was condemned to Hell upon his eventual death.
Because of this, he spent his life trying to earn redemption by fighting supernatural forces. Reeves shared his excitement about the sequel, saying, “We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios, and they said, ‘Okay.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
While specific plot details are still unknown, Reeves confirmed that Constantine 2 will stay true to the dark and eerie atmosphere of the first movie.
He emphasized that they are not changing the tone or style, and fans can expect John Constantine to face even more suffering. “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more,” Reeves teased, suggesting that the character’s struggles will continue in the sequel.
