Production and Remaster Details
The 4K remaster is based on a new scan of the original 35mm film negative, ensuring high-definition clarity while preserving Mamoru Oshii’s visionary artistry. The original Angel’s Egg OVA debuted in Japan in 1985, directed by Mamoru Oshii at Studio DEEN.
Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano conceived the story, with Oshii writing the screenplay and directing, while Amano handled art direction. The production team also included Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada, with Yoshihiro Kanno composing the atmospheric music that defines the OVA.
Legacy and Western Recognition
Before its recent festival screenings, Angel’s Egg had rarely been available in the West in its original form. In 1987, Carl Colpaert’s live-action/animated film In the Aftermath incorporated some of its footage.
In September 2023, the Japan Society in New York City hosted a screening of the anime, marking one of the first opportunities for Western audiences to experience the original film. The new 4K remaster now ensures that Oshii’s haunting, allegorical masterpiece reaches a global audience in stunning detail.
What Fans Can Expect
With the 4K remaster, Angel’s Egg will finally be seen in its intended visual and artistic glory. Festival-goers and anime enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing Oshii’s surreal, atmospheric storytelling, Amano’s distinctive art, and the haunting musical score as originally conceived. The 2025 screenings across Manchester, New York, Los Angeles, and Sitges solidify the anime’s enduring legacy and bring it to a new generation of viewers worldwide.
