Algren is transported to Katsumoto’s village, where he will live with his family. While he is initially mistreated, he eventually earns the respect of the Samurai and even becomes friends with Katsumoto. He develops empathy for the Samurai, who are dissatisfied with how quickly modern technology has eroded their society’s traditions. Ninjas
A group of ninjas infiltrate the village one night and attempt to kill Katsumoto. Algren saves Katsumoto’s life and then assists in defending the village, concluding that Omura hired the ninjas. Katsumoto asks Emperor Meiji for a meeting and is granted safe passage to Tokyo. He brings Algren with the intention of releasing him. When Algren arrives in Tokyo, he discovers that the Imperial Army has become a well-trained and well-equipped fighting force. To his dismay, Katsumoto discovers that the Emperor, who is young and inexperienced, has essentially become Omura’s puppet.
Omura orders Katsumoto’s arrest at a government meeting for carrying a sword in public and demands that he perform seppuku to redeem his honor. Due to his sympathy, Algren declines Omura’s offer to lead the new army to crush the rebels. Omura dispatches assassins to assassinate Algren, but Algren defeats them. The Last Samurai Ending Explained
A grieving Katsumoto considers seppuku as the Imperial Army marches to crush the rebellion, but Algren persuades him to fight until the end, and he joins the Samurai in battle. The Samurai used the Imperial Army’s arrogance to trap them and deprive them of artillery support. The Imperial soldiers are forced to retreat due to the ensuing battle, which results in massive casualties on both sides.
