Plot
In the movie, Russell (Bale), a steel mill worker in Pennsylvania, and his brother Rodney (Affleck), an Iraq War veteran, are unable to adjust to civil life. John Petty (Dafoe), a bar manager and petty criminal who operates illicit gambling operations, pays Rodney to fight bare-knuckle for him. However, after suffering gambling losses, Rodney goes so much into debt that he begs Petty for a lucrative match. As a result, Petty makes an arrangement for a fight with a criminal group, Rodney vanishes, and his brother sets out to discover what happened.

Russell murders the meth-addicted crime leader who killed his brother, Harlan DeGroat (Harrelson), in front of the local sheriff after being stopped by law enforcement (Whitaker). The scene transitions to Russell calmly sitting in his living room, reading some letters while resting his one arm on the table. Director Cooper claims that “The Godfather Part II” is being referenced in the closing shot. It Is supposed to be a homage to the iconic film godfather.
Russel Baze was not detained following the murder of DeGroat, and the reasons were quite apparent, but let me clear all your doubts. The Sheriff let him free as compensation for snatching the love of his life while he was imprisoned. The sheriff also thought Degroat deserved to die, and he was aware that Russell already had enough suffering to cope with outside of prison. Russell believed that if he had not slain Harlan DeGroat, he might have been arrested or killed by the police. He never imagined that the sheriff would let him go and eventually offer to make things right. He also lets him go because he knows that DeGroat deserved to die, and he somehow finds his end justified.

What Were Those Letters?
We are aware that he used to write letters when he was imprisoned and stack them up rather than mailing them. The thought of Russell reading those letters in this location emphasizes any thoughts he may be having, including those of all the people he has lost, including Rodney, his father, and consequently a great number of others. This, combined with a sense of hopelessness, makes you wonder if Russell will ever be able to continue, as he always did, no matter what.
The extended arm represents the fact that he has “bled out” all of his strength and virtue, that he is now a broken man, and that the arms that helped build America have become weak and broken as a result of violence, corruption, and the governments and capitalist disregard for human beings. His brother served in the military but received nothing but trauma for it. His father’s illness was caused by the mill he worked at, and it was closing because Industrials could now buy cheaper steel from China and other places.
The final scene for me involved a man who paid for his vengeance but received nothing in return and found no comfort in killing, and was also a victim. Nearly every main character was a victim, and they had no choice. Harlan didn’t want to murder the brother, but he had to settle a score with his partner, and the brother was an unlucky witness, so Degroat was regretful even while shooting him. Basically, each and every one of the parties concerned experienced worsening circumstances, which they couldn’t do anything about.
