Since 1996, the Mission: Impossible films have become one of Hollywood’s most successful action franchises, known for their incredible stunts, exotic locales, and ensemble casts. Tom Cruise has anchored the series from the beginning as super spy Ethan Hunt, but the movies have introduced memorable new characters with each installment.

One such standout was Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt, who made his debut in 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and became a fan favorite as Hunt’s right-hand man. But when 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout arrived, Brandt was nowhere to be seen, leaving many fans asking: why did Jeremy Renner leave Mission: Impossible?

Jeremy Renner in Mission Impossible

Jeremy Renner has been a staple of the Mission: Impossible film franchise since joining the cast as William Brandt in 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Renner went on to reprise his role as Brandt in 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. However, the actor was noticeably absent from 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, leading many fans to wonder why Renner left the popular action series.

Renner’s character William Brandt, an IMF analyst, was introduced in Ghost Protocol as a replacement for IMF agent Trevor Hanaway, who was murdered early in the film. Brandt joined Ethan Hunt’s team for the remainder of the movie as they went on the run to clear their organization’s name after a bombing destroyed the Kremlin. Brandt proved himself to be more than just an analyst, showcasing impressive field skills that led Hunt to recruit him as a full-fledged field agent by the end of the film.

In Rogue Nation, Brandt continued to work alongside Hunt as a key member of his team. However, Rogue Nation would end up being Renner’s last Mission: Impossible film to date. So what led to the actor’s departure from the franchise?

Why did Jeremy Renner leave Mission Impossible?

According to reports, the main reason Jeremy Renner did not return for Fallout was scheduling conflicts with other projects. In 2016, it was announced that Renner had been cast as Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel Avengers: Endgame. Since the Mission: Impossible and Avengers films were both being shot and released around the same time, this made it virtually impossible for Renner to star in both franchises simultaneously.

Renner had become a fan favorite within the Mission: Outlandish movies, known for his dry mind and abilities as an examiner and field operator. He was considered a commendable expansion to the IMF group and a reviving complement to Cruise’s Hunt. So why did he conclusion up clearing out the establishment after fair two movies? One of the main reasons cited for Renner’s departure was scheduling issues. By 2018, Renner had become a very busy actor, taking on multiple franchise roles.

Paramount Pictures, the studio behind Mission: Impossible, attempted to work around Renner’s availability but ultimately could not make the dates work. As a result, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and producer Tom Cruise made the difficult decision to move forward on Fallout without Renner’s character.

While scheduling was the primary issue, some reports also suggested there were monetary factors at play, with Renner asking for a higher salary to return that the studio was unwilling to meet. But the scheduling challenges with the Avengers films were likely the overriding factor that forced Renner to step aside from the Mission: Impossible series.

Beyond the logistical issues, Renner’s departure from Mission: Impossible also made sense from a narrative perspective. Over the course of two films, Brandt had completed a satisfying character arc, going from desk analyst to full-fledged field agent under Ethan Hunt’s mentorship. Bringing Brandt back for a third film may have felt repetitive from a storytelling standpoint.

By having Brandt sit Fallout out, it allowed the writers to focus on developing other characters like Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and August Walker (Henry Cavill), who were new additions to the IMF team. Many critics praised Fallout for introducing fresh dynamics between Hunt and the other agents. If Brandt had returned, it might have felt like a rehash of his relationships with Hunt and Benji that had already been established in the previous two films.

While Jeremy Renner did not appear in Fallout, the actor has expressed interest in reprising his role as Brandt down the line if his schedule allows it. The Mission: Impossible franchise has shown a willingness to bring back characters after absences, like Michelle Monaghan’s Julia Meade in Fallout after missing Rogue Nation.

Ultimately, Jeremy Renner’s departure from the Mission: Impossible franchise came down to bad timing, with simultaneous commitments to the Avengers films forcing him to sit out one installment. But Renner remains on good terms with Tom Cruise and the Mission: Impossible team. If the stars align schedule-wise, fans shouldn’t rule out seeing the highly skilled agent Brandt back in the field with Ethan Hunt again soon.
